An object 30 cm tall is 10.5 cm from a concave mirror of focal length 16 cm. Find (a) image position and (b) image height. Use real-is-positive mirror signs.

30 cm بلند جسم مقعر آئینے سے10.5 cm، f = 16 cm۔ حقیقی مثبت ضابطے میں (الف) عکس کی جگہ،(ب) بلندی نکالیں۔

Solution & explanation

  1. Given: h₀ = 30 cm; u = +10.5 cm; f = +16 cm.

  2. Rearrange the mirror equation.

    1v=-1u+1f
  3. Substitute the distances in the same unit.

    1v=-1×110.5+116
  4. Use a common denominator 336.

    1v=-1×32336+21336=-11336
  5. Take the reciprocal. Negative means virtual behind the mirror.

    v=-33611
  6. Calculate magnification.

    m=-vu
  7. Substitute the unrounded image distance.

    m=33611212=3211
  8. Multiply by object height. Positive height means upright.

    hi=96011=96011
  9. State the result with units: v ≈ −30.55 cm; hᵢ ≈ +87.27 cm.

v ≈ −30.55 cm; hᵢ ≈ 87.27 cm, virtual and upright
