Why do gas giants such as Jupiter have lower densities than rocky planets such as Earth and Mars despite their larger size? What does this reveal about internal structure?
Solution & explanation
Density is mass/volume, not size alone. Giant planets contain much hydrogen and helium, whereas terrestrial planets contain a larger fraction of dense rock and metal. Their interiors are compressed and complex, not simply empty gas bags.
