Textbook brain teaser
If protons repel, how can many stay packed in a tiny nucleus? What holds them together?
Solution & explanation
The short-range strong nuclear interaction between nucleons can overcome proton electrical repulsion at nuclear separations. Neutrons contribute binding without adding positive charge. Stability depends on the proton/neutron balance and nuclear structure; sufficiently heavy or unbalanced nuclei can be unstable.
