Why are step-up and step-down transformers used in transmission?

For a given transmitted power, higher voltage allows lower current. Cable heating loss I²R then falls. A step-up transformer raises voltage near generation; successive step-down stages reduce it for distribution and use. Lower voltage is relative and does not automatically mean safe contact.
