Why does the sky appear blue during the day but red at sunset?

Air molecules scatter shorter visible wavelengths more strongly. At noon blue scattered light reaches us from many directions. At sunset the long atmospheric path removes much blue from the direct beam, leaving more red and orange. The solar spectrum and eye response also affect the perceived colour.
