Resistors 8 Ω and 24 Ω are in parallel across 30 V. Find equivalent resistance and total current.

Solution & explanation

Parallel branches share 30 V.
Add reciprocal resistances.
$\frac{1}{R} = \frac{1}{24} + \frac{1}{8}$
Use common denominator 24.
$\frac{1}{R} = \frac{1}{24} + \frac{3}{24} = \frac{4}{24} = \frac{1}{6}$
Take reciprocal.
$R = 6$
Use total I = V/R.
$I = \frac{30}{6} = 5$
Check branch currents and add.
$I = \frac{30}{24} + \frac{30}{8} = 1.25 + 3.75 = 5$

R = 6 Ω; I = 5 A
