Why must an ammeter have very low resistance and be connected in series, while a voltmeter has very high resistance and is connected in parallel? What happens if they are connected incorrectly?
Solution & explanation
An ammeter must carry branch current without much voltage drop. A voltmeter measures the same two nodes while drawing little current. An ammeter placed across a supply can nearly short it; a voltmeter in series greatly reduces current. The ideal limits are zero and infinite resistance respectively.
