A conductor and an insulator are both placed in an electric field. How will their behaviour differ, and why?
Solution & explanation
Mobile charges redistribute through a conductor; at electrostatic equilibrium its internal field is zero. In an insulator, charges remain bound but can shift slightly or rotate dipoles, causing polarisation.
