Textbook Example 13.3

A ship’s sonar pulse returns after 3.2 s. Sound speed in water is 1600 m s⁻¹. Find ship-to-seafloor distance.

Solution & explanation

  1. The 3.2 s includes outward and return travel.

  2. Calculate the total path.

    s=1600×3.2=5120

  3. The total path equals twice the depth.

    s=2×d

  4. Divide both sides by two.

    d=51202

  5. Evaluate.

    d=2560

  6. Check: two times 2560 m divided by 1600 m s⁻¹ gives 3.2 s.

Depth = 2560 m
