Textbook brain teaser
Why do we hear our own voice echoing when we shout, and what role do air particles play?
Solution & explanation
The outward sound is reflected by a distant surface. Returning pressure disturbances make nearby air particles oscillate and transfer energy to the ear. A sufficient delay separates the reflection from the original sound; particles relay the disturbance rather than making the whole outward-and-return trip.
