Why do the coloured convection currents in the beaker die away after the burner is removed?

Continued uneven heating maintains the density differences driving circulation. After heat input stops, mixing and cooling reduce those differences and viscosity dissipates the motion. The currents do not necessarily stop instantly: stored heat can sustain them briefly. Colour is a tracer of motion, not its cause.
