PHYSICS 10 SCIENCE · 2026–27 · D · Comprehensive answers · QUESTION 11.2 · EM p. 31

How does radiation differ from conduction and convection in terms of heat transfer? Give everyday examples and explain how different surfaces affect radiation absorption and emission.

Solution & explanation

Conduction transfers energy through microscopic interactions, as along a metal spoon. Convection carries energy with fluid movement, as in a heated room. Radiation uses electromagnetic waves, as warmth from sunlight, and needs no medium. Dull black surfaces are generally good infrared absorbers and emitters; polished surfaces are good reflectors.
