Practice question from chapter text
Why can liquid rise in a thermometer but water behave unusually near freezing?
تھرمامیٹر میں مائع کیوں چڑھتا اور انجماد کے قریب پانی غیر معمولی کیوں ہوتا ہے؟
Solution & explanation
A thermometer liquid usually expands more than its container as temperature rises, moving up the narrow stem. Water has maximum density near 4°C and expands when cooled from about 4°C toward freezing; ice expands further on formation. Do not apply a constant positive expansion coefficient across that exceptional range.
