How does a refrigerator cool without using CFC refrigerants?

A suitable refrigerant evaporates at low pressure inside the evaporator and absorbs heat. A compressor raises its pressure; outside the compartment it condenses and releases heat. Expansion lowers pressure again. CFC-free means an alternative refrigerant is used, not that cooling needs no energy or that all alternatives have zero environmental impact.
