Why should a water bottle not be filled completely before freezing?

Water expands on freezing because ice has a more open molecular structure. In a full closed rigid bottle the extra volume can create enough stress to crack it. This is water’s unusual freezing behaviour, not the ordinary rule that every liquid expands on cooling.
