Textbook brain teaser
Why do superconductors need very low temperatures to work?
فوق موصلوں کو کام کرنے کے لیے بہت کم درجہ حرارت کیوں درکار ہوتا ہے؟
Solution & explanation
Below a material’s critical temperature a collective superconducting state can form. In conventional superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs; thermal agitation above the critical temperature disrupts that state. Different materials have different critical temperatures, and high-temperature superconductors still commonly require cooling. Not every material becomes superconducting on cooling.
