The Prince changes from a sheltered pleasure-seeker into a compassionate observer of suffering. He is generous and morally courageous, giving away his ruby, eyes and gold. His physical inability to move makes him dependent on the Swallow, yet it does not prevent action. Giving his second eye to the match-girl shows that others’ safety matters more to him than his own appearance or sight.
